With the increasing emphasis on environmental resources, the circular economy development model centered on waste material recycling and comprehensive resource utilization has become a global economic development trend. China, with its vast population, has limited per capita natural resources, significantly lower than that of Western countries. Vigorously developing technologies for resource recycling will have a profound impact on national economic development and environmental sustainability. The production of wood-plastic composite materials using waste plastics and lignocellulose is a good project that meets this requirement.
Research on wood-plastic composites has also been initiated domestically. Tangshan Plastics Research Institute, National University of Defense Technology, and Guangdong University of Technology have achieved success in adding low-proportion wood powder or plant fibers. Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Beijing Foton have also developed equipment in this regard. In addition, enterprises and individuals in Wuxi, Hangzhou, and Mengcheng, Anhui Province, have conducted research in this area. The Beijing Chemical Industry Research Institute began working on the pyrolysis of waste plastics in 1988. Over its long-term work, it was found that pyrolysis cannot fundamentally solve the pollution problem, whereas mechanical recycling of waste plastics can completely address it. Therefore, the Beijing Chemical Industry Research Institute has conducted extensive research on wood powder-filled waste plastics and has achieved preliminary results in terms of formulation, specialized equipment, and product mold design.
With the continuous improvement of people's understanding of wood-plastic composite products and the ongoing exploration of these materials, there are an increasing number of domestic manufacturers producing wood-plastic composites. Both in terms of technology and product quality, China's wood-plastic composites are constantly improving and have reached a certain level and standard.
